Anil Kapoor is the worst dad ever!
Posted on June 10th, 2008 by tigger under Anil Kapoor, Sonam KapoorSorry about the lack of captions. Still have to get some of my old programs back.
You know, some people wonder why so many people go into therapy nowadays. It’s because of their parents! You know, most parents are supportive of their kids, encouraging them in whatever they do and hopefully being there for them when they screw up. They’re also the ones that tell you you look gorgeous/handsome/thin/smart/whatever you feel down. Then there are other parents who are demanding, perfectionists, irrational and just a royal pain in the ass. Poor Sonam Kapoor has parents of the latter category, or at least, her father is like that.
Sonam celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday and like others, did not have a lot of fun because of the bug that seems to be going around Bollywood. Or maybe she was sick because her father is a douche-bag who gave her a fat free sugarless cake on her birthday! That shouldn’t even be called a cake…you know what else is sugarless and fat free? Crap. I think I made my point.
“I thought I had slimmed enough. I lost 35 kgs before Saawariya. I’ve been constantly keeping my weight down. But I think Dad knows the other girls are looking very slim these. It was his way of letting me know that I needed to get even thinner. A strange present on my birthday.”
“None of us was in the mood to party. Dad did get me a sugar-free cake and I blew out the candles in front of my family. But that’s about it..There were too many illnesses and hospitalizations in the family.”
“I’m going on a diet. I need to get thinner to look comparable with the other girls. Look at Deepika. She’s athletic and slim. I’m not an athlete. But I’m a runner. I love to go on long runs all on my own for miles and miles. That is a sure way to lose weight.”
“I have to. It’s not a vanity. It’s for my sanity. I can’t be happy being healthy when the other girls are frantically losing weight. So thanks to my Dad I’m losing more weight.”
Thanks to her dad, she’ll have an eating disorder before her next birthday. Someone, please, call child services in, this is horrible! As a girl with a serious sweet tooth, I know we shouldn’t have too much chocolate and sweets but there is also a thing called a healthy balance. Look at her, she’s already freakin’ skinny, if she loses any more weight, she’ll just fade away to nothing.
Urr, maybe it sounds like I’m over-reacting but it’s stuff like this that pisses me off big time. If parents start acting like the pictures in a fashion magazine, then we are so screwed.
So now it’s official, Anil Kapoor sucks!

Totally agree for one reason: if Anil was doing because of her health, i.e., she had a health issue, that would be understandable. But he is doing it for only one reason, for her to compete with the others, regardless of whether she has the talent or not. I have a feeling that it is a personal, prestige, issue with him. He needs a whipping.
But Tiggy, I also think this whole thing has touched off a raw nerve in you, and it’s personal. Yes or no?

Good point Locust, but it’s not like she’s chubby in the first place. If she really lost 35kg already, then maybe she was a bit overweight but wanting to lose any more is just insanity. If I lost 35kg, I’d lose more than half my body weight.
Lol, yes to the raw nerve but no, it’s not personal. You know I graduated with a degree in psychology? Well, I find eating disorders fascinating. I mean, what makes a girl look in the mirror and ask who’s the fattest of them all? It’s seriously disturbing. In a way, it’s a hallucination, she’s seeing something that no one else can see.
And I was doing volunteer work at a depression and anxiety clinic where people could call in anonymously for telephone counselling. You won’t believe how many girls (and guys) call in, saying they’re fat and they want to lose weight and they don’t know how…these are young kids (12-16) who are still going through puberty! Or even parents that call in that worry about their kids who aren’t eating and they think they might be anorexic or bulimic. And South Africa has diverse cultures and races. Some people just can’t be thin, because of their body structure and when they can’t lose weight, then they get depressed.
So fashion magazines, movie industries and TVs sends horrible messages to kids, that being thin is more important that being healthy. If your parents start doing the same, then you’re screwed. And look at what Sonam Kapoor said “It’s not a vanity. It’s for my sanity. I can’t be happy being healthy when the other girls are frantically losing weight.” That should be setting off alarm bells all over the place.
So no Mr Locust Freud, lol, it’s not personal. But believe me, I would come back from those counselling shifts either sick to my stomach, angry at stupid people or depressed. One of the reasons I’m now doing postgrad work in something completely different. So there’s your raw nerve

By personal, I meant the issue is important to you personally, not that you personally have this issue. In fact I said that because I knew your background (remember?). Sorry if I offended you.
And yes, it is a huge issue in the U.S. and some other western countries, and because of the ubiquitous US culture worldwide now, it is manifesting itself where it never existed before.

Lol, um, I wasn’t offended. Why do all the ultra-nice guys like you apologise so much?! Lol, I have a friend who’s kinda like you (minus the huge reserves of Bollywood knowledge and the ponytail, lol) but whenever he says something that disagress with what I said or if I misunderstood him, like now, then he starts apologising. I’m not a girl! I mean, I am, but I don’t get insulted at the drop of a hat. Lol, I did think you meant whether it happened to me or anyone I know, but oh well, I see what you mean now.
I think US culture may have hit India harder than other countries. I mean, have you ever seen a chubby person make it in the industry in recent years? And Hollywood is trying to change the trend and even fat girls do have a chance (like that girl from Hairspray) while India is just going deeper in.
June 12th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
No, not deeper in, there is a long time lag.
I apologized because I seemed to have caused angst, and it wasn’t intended. And, I still think you were offended, although you are putting up a brave face and are being gracious. Anyway, we go back long enough that this misunderstanding is not a show stopper.

Maybe, but are they going to wait until they have a whole generation of girls with eating disorders before they change anything?
Lol, Locust, just because I’m passionate about something doesn’t mean I’m full of angst. You had every right to ask that question and when I go off on a rant like this, then it usually shows that I do care more. But whatever, ‘chooro yaar’, nothing happened so we’re good.:-D
